I want there to be an article in the declaration of children's rights and human rights in every constitution that gives everyone the right to escape. A schoolchild would have the right to run from a lesson, a dog could run away from his master, and anyone recently tied to a new job could flee, especially if he has a faithful girlfriend to go to. I want there to be real options to escape from a city where you feel ill at ease and there is nowhere to go, to spurn a university where they have nothing to teach you and a job where you look for any legal or not completely legal means of distraction. There came a moment when everything around me was filled with the concept of flight – everyone was resisting imposed tastes, behavioural stereotypes, regulations and moral norms. And I watched as they all made their escape, one after the other: someone I know acquired a happy Swedish family, another grew substances that help you avoid contact with reality in his mezzanine, one guy rehearsed with his group in the garage for whole days at a time so as not to set eyes on his pregnant girlfriend, another simply drove cars from one place to the next. Or here's another example: a couple bought identical rings and went off to live at the dacha, their escape from escaping was the only way to preserve their relationship – to see old friends less often and learn Spanish in order to run away even further, to South America.
Why do I need to know what is meant by auto-asphyxiation and felching? I would like statistics in a well-known web encyclopaedia on how many young people fell head-over-heels in love for the first time this year, not only how many died from unfortunate sexual experiences, bulimia and homemade LSD. I want to know the average age of people who will write a collected book of verse, not only how many girls get plastic breasts. And in general I am not against having the opportunity to escape all this, although preferably in the knowledge that I would have something to return to.
