The Queen of post-modern Norwegian architecture
The”Kristin Jarmund-selected works” travelling exhibition is comparable to a Russian Matryoshka doll. Within each layer new experiences and surprising perspectives are revealed.
Twenty years after presenting her first new building in Oslo, Kristin Jarmund (born in 1954) stands out as one of the leading architects in newer Norwegian architecture history. The National Museum (Nasjonalmuseet) has chosen her career for the publishing of the second book in a series of architectural monographies, which says quite a lot about her standing in the architectural circles.
- It is important that architects merge with the novel that the city is, and write their chapter while being conscious of other stories, says Jarmund. Her works actually reflect an analytical perspective, a mastering of the forms in her interpretational capabilities, and personal comprehension.
In her works, Jarmund manages to create her personal expression, because she works through the volume composition of the building and refines details. In this manner she creates a surprising expression and interesting variations within the strict framework she and her colleagues define for the architectonic expression of form. The goal is not necessarily to create something beautiful, but to provide the building with identity, make use of the landscape and the content. All of this contributes to making these buildings part of the Norwegian architecture history.
The travelling exhibition has so far visited 7 countries. The exhibition is shaped like a cube and contains photographies of 9 projects taken by the internationally renowned photographer Per Maning. In addition, it presents supplementing drawing materials and textual information, examples of the strong colours used, two models and last but not lead material samples that the visitors can touch.
During the last twenty years, Kristin Jarmund has an extensive and widespread production of high
quality behind her – from interiors, as the little, sophisticated kiosk made out of glass in the café
in the National Gallery, to large office buildings. Her schools have been innovative and her urban
are amongst the most interesting in Norway for many years. (Ulf Grønvold)
Kristin Jarmund (b. 1954) is educated at the Norwegian Technical University in Trondheim and at
Architectural Association (AA) in London. She has received several architectural awards of the
highest standard in Norway and she has had different prominent posts within city development,
i.e. as leader of the City of Oslo Board of Urban Architecture. She is both a member of the
Norwegian Architectural Association (NAL) and the Norwegian Organisation Of Interior Architects
And Furniture Designers (NIL). The architectural practice Kristin Jarmund Arkitekter AS was
established in 1985 and includes both architects and interior architects.
