Gruntovka 9-20 september 2010 GOLDEN POT Petr Maslov Curator - Bogdan Mamonov   9-11 october 2008 FACTORIES OF THE IMAGINATION Conference "FACTORIES OF THE IMAGINATION: new territories of culture" took place on 9-11 October 2008 in Moscow. The venues of the conference were Centre for Creative Industries PROEKT_FABRIKA, WINZAVOD - Moscow Contemporary Art Centre and THE GARAGE - Centre for Contemporary Culture Moscow. The aim of the conference was to present European and Russian experience in establishment and development of the new territories for culture and art. One of the main focuses of the conference is the conversion of the former industrial sites into cultural clusters and multidisciplinary spaces for art and culture. In the European urban landscape of the en of the 20th century, many sites symbolic of industrial merchant and military age lost their raison d’etre and felt into disuse, their memory set aside. "Industrial wastelands, eyesores, silent spaces" are words of absence that designate the brutal passage from one epoch to another, leaving neighborhoods disfigured and people out of work…and yet they open unexpected perspectives for use. Among these deserted places, some are being re-used and little by little, are finding new life. This issues at stake with regard to conservation join this those of the artists and cultural activists who whish to influence their culture and their time. The conference opened a two year project "Factories of the Imagination: new territories of culture" is aimed at providing the ground for the experience exchange of the process of conversion of industrial sites into multidisciplinary arts and cultural centres in Russia and Europe. The project will be implemented during the years 2008-2009 by Dance Agency TsEKh (Moscow / Russia), Cultural Centre Aktovy Zal (Moscow / Russia), Centre for creative industries Proekt_Fabrika (Moscow / Russia), French Cultural Centre in Moscow, Trans Europe Halles Network, Cultural Centre Mains d’Oeuvres (Saint-Ouen / France), Cultural Centre La Ferme Du Buisson (Noisiel / France), Cultural Centre Melkweg ( Amsterdam / The Netherlands) and Cultural Centre The Arts Printing House (Vilnius / Lithuania). The project is funded by the European Union in the framework of the "EU-Russia Cooperation Programme: Support to Cultural Cooperation Initiative" and Ford Foundation. The activities will take place on the partly converted industrial complex into Centre for creative industries Proekt_Fabrika and at one of its venues Aktovy Zal opened by Dance agency TsEKh in September 2006. The projects main activities include the conference "Factories of the Imagination: new territories of culture", professional meetings, 4 festivals of contemporary art, co-producing of contemporary dance performances and creation of a short documentary film abut the project.
