ABOUT US

Asya Filippova, director

Founded in 2004, PROEKT_FABRIKA is the first independent not-for-profit contemporary visual art organisation in Moscow. Our project has more than 700 square meters of exhibition spaces, international residency,and 1000 square metres of venue space destined to accommodate diverse cultural and social events such as dance, theatre and music concerts. Originally designed to present a program of collective exhibitions, the project is now committed to promoting cultural and intellectual diversity through the presentation of international contemporary art and culture. In 2008 our centre became a member of Trans Europe Halls ( European network of independent culture centers).

PROEKT_FABRIKA's mission is: challenging familiar ideas and concepts in order to formally defamiliarise them so that they can be seen anew. Our programs are devoted towards inspiring thought and creativity whilst simultaneously stimulating public curiosity about contemporary art, thereby contributing towards developing the cultural identity of 21st Century Moscow.

The project originally came about as the result of some simple and obvious ideas which were subsequently combined with the enthusiasm of key people from the spheres of business and art who realised the following: There is the need for non-profit independent exhibition space in Moscow, however, at the time no such space existed. The answer appears to lie in the fact that there is a space at the paper factory, which is not used for production any more and hence might be converted for the specific purpose of exhibiting contemporary art work. The management of the factory is interested in facilitating and championing the continuation of this conversion project. The trend of industrial conversion is commonly accepted and well known, and so it is as appropriate for this work to take place in Moscow, which follows the same trends as most megalopolises, as in any other major city. Projects such as this are not uncommon in many well known cities such as London, Berlin, New York etc. As contemporary art comes more and more into demand in Russia, so the public interest in it is growing rapidly. Modern Russians, especially young aspirational people, need not only cinemas and restaurants, but something new, unusual and provocative; thus, in October 2004, the first industrial shop floor was renovated into an exhibition hall, and in January 2005 PROEKT_FABRIKA started up. Since that time the projects listed below were realised as we began to explore and make manifest our initial objectives. Apart from the exhibition activity already mentioned, we are keen to develop joint projects in drama and documentary and also to diversify and develop our collaboration with those other contemporary art galleries in Moscow who would mutually benefit from such a co-operative and supportive working relationship. e.g. The Moscow House of Photography, with whom we have already begun to develop close links. PROEKT_FABRIKA intends to present some international not-for-profit exhibition projects so as to strengthen the unifying and mutually beneficial advantages of collaborating in such a bringing together of cultures by which process we shall hope to affect and engage with contemporary art and culture both at home and abroad.

For Russian Followers of Contemporary Art, Best Part of the Exhibit Might Be the Venue

..... But the hall itself, part of a newly renovated 19th-century factory, is eye-catching. From the white-haired woman in the guardhouse, who opens the door with an oversize key, to the nearby black-box theater that was once a factory club for workers, it is redolent with life and memories.
......PROEKT_FABRIKA, or Project Factory, where Skelton's work is located, is particularly startling because one-third of the plant is still a functioning production site for technical paper.
Elsewhere in the complex, a dance collective called TSEH, which means workshop, has run the flexible performance space known as a black-box theater since last fall. "It was a big issue to have our own space, to have our own home," said director Elena Tupyseva. "Now we perform two times a month." Art films and experimental music are also shown at the venue.
The success of some of these projects and a general rise in interest here in the postindustrial aesthetic have spurred plans to convert bigger factories that are in even greater disrepair. So far, the city and state have not contributed any money, according to artists and architects. Instead, the private funds of Moscow moguls are driving the change.

Quand les murs grondent à la «Proekt Fabrika» de Moscou, on ne sait jamais si c'est la chaîne de fabrication de papiers industriels.... ou la répétition d'une pièce de théâtre. Le visiteur qui s'aventurera jusqu'ici prendra garde à pousser les bonnes portes: certaines mènent à des salles d'exposition, un théâtre, des studios de cinéma ou de photographie. D'autres ouvrent sur d'énormes machines qui produisent des rouleaux de papiers collants et synthétiques, dans un vacarme de film d'horreur. Après Londres, la Ruhr ou Budapest, Moscou s'est lancée à son tour dans la reconversion de ses vieilles usines en galeries d'art, musées, restaurants ou boîtes de nuit. A sa façon, effrénée, anarchique et dispendieuse. Pour qui ne connaît encore de Moscou que le triangle Kremlin, Place Rouge, Saint Basile, c'est le moment d'y revenir voir, savourer des peintures dans une ancienne chocolaterie, lamper un coktail dans une fabrique d'ampoules ou danser dans un silo. De toutes ces métamorphoses, le «Proekt Fabrika» est la plus originale, puisqu'ici l'art et l'industrie se confrontent. «Notre lieu est unique, peut se vanter sa directrice, Assia Filippova, économiste reconvertie elle-même dans les beaux-arts à mesure que les jeunes créateurs investissaient son usine. Ce n'est pas que nous soyons particulièrement géniaux, mais ailleurs au monde un tel mixte serait sans doute interdit pour raisons de sécurité. L'art requiert des portes ouvertes, quand l'industrie aime les huis clos». En Russie, la contradiction ne fait pas peur. «L'autre jour, mon directeur d'atelier vient m'annoncer qu'on lui a volé un sac de dextrine, une poudre qui nous sert à fabriquer des papiers adhésifs, raconte Assia. Le sac de dextrine avait plu à un photographe qui voulait en faire un décor...»

Proekt_Fabrika: una nueva forma de mirar al arte contemporáneo

Ana Sánchez Resalt, Observatorio Eurasia ::: Proekt_Fabrika (Proyecto Fábrica) es hoy uno de los centros moscovitas más importantes de arte contemporáneo. Su directora, Asya Filippova, nos habla de él.

En las últimas décadas, el arte contemporáneo ha dejado de ser coto privado para expertos y snobs y ha empezado a interesar y atraer a un público más amplio. A los coleccionistas privados que ven en esas obras una inversión segura de futuro, ahora se añaden los pequeños coleccionistas, generalmente jóvenes que quieren tener una pieza única en sus casas por puro amor al arte. Hay más compradores y más visitantes, y así es más fácil que proliferen agentes de arte, galerías, museos y centros de arte contemporáneo. Debido a la crisis, muchos de estos nuevos centros han tenido que cerrar sus puertas. Los que han logrado sobrevivir capean la situación como pueden y unos pocos se han atrevido a innovar y arriesgar, a apostar por el arte joven más transgresor. Con la idea de apoyar las nuevas manifestaciones artísticas, nació en Moscú en 2004 Proekt_Fabrika (Proyecto Fábrica), el primer centro independiente de arte visual contemporáneo sin ánimo de lucro. Su objetivo inicial era conseguir un lugar con un buen programa de exposiciones colectivas, pero la excelente acogida por parte del público moscovita y de los artistas, amplió el proyecto y sus miras están dirigidas ahora a promover la diversidad intelectual y cultural a través de la presentación del arte contemporáneo internacional. El centro está pensado para albergar exposiciones internacionales y exposiciones colectivas organizadas en cooperación con museos e institutos de arte contemporáneo y en colaboración con festivales de distintas disciplinas artísticas y la Bienal de Moscú. Además, galeristas rusos son periódicamente invitados a utilizar los espacios del centro para exhibir las obras de sus artistas. La organización también destina sus salas a la realización de proyectos propios, orientados por los comisarios del centro y desarrollados en los distintos estudios. Proekt_Fabrika acoge trabajos de artistas rusos y extranjeros elegidos con el asesoramiento de “algunos expertos-comisarios que nos ayudan a seleccionar los proyectos. No hay límite de edad o nacionalidad, la única condición es la calidad. Al mismo tiempo, tendemos a seleccionar proyectos que se correspondan con nuestro proyecto: baile y teatro contemporáneo, medios y arte conceptual”, explica Asya Filippova, directora y una de los fundadores de Proekt_Fabrika.
